Editorial 2017

This past year was an exciting time for IMPULSE, as we celebrated the addition of two Reviewer Training Sites and the expansion of our international presence in neuroscience. The Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editor, Rachel Sledge and Elisabeth Moore, were able to broaden our international network by representing IMPULSE at the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies Forum in Copenhagen, Denmark. Additionally, members of our editorial staff connected with colleagues at the Society for Neuroscience meeting in San Diego, CA, and SYNAPSE in Clinton, SC. While this past year marks the retirement of IMPULSE’s founding Faculty Advisor Emerita, Dr. Leslie S. Jones, her guidance and support will continue to inspire the journal as we move forward into the upcoming year. We would like to congratulate Dr. Jones on her retirement and express our appreciation for her efforts in establishing and leading the journal for 14 successful years of publication.

As we enter into IMPULSE’s 15th year, I am excited to continue the journal’s momentum in my position as Editor-in-Chief. I look forward to working with our current editorial staff to further expand the journal’s recognition and size, as we represent IMPULSE at the 2017 Society for Neuroscience meeting in Washington, DC. I will be working closely with IMPULSE’s new Faculty Advisor, Dr. Mark C. Zrull, as the journal will continue at the host site of Appalachian State University. With a recent surge in submissions, the editorial staff looks forward to an especially exciting year of publication!

Meghan Pavelka

Some goodbyes are more bittersweet than others. Working with IMPULSE has been a hallmark of my undergraduate experience, and the writing, editing, leadership, and communication experiences I have gained will serve me for life. This past year has been a bit of a milestone year for IMPULSE. We came into this year thinking that it may be the last hosted at Appalachian State due to the Founding Faculty Advisor’s, Dr. Leslie Sargent Jones, retirement. Fortunately, Dr. Mark Zrull has stepped up to serve as the Faculty Advisor, and we are very grateful for his commitment and guidance. This year, we added two new reviewer training sites, Sewannee- The College of the South, and the University of Alabama- Birmingham. Managing Editor Elisabeth Moore and I travelled to Copenhagen, Denmark to broaden our international network at the FENS conference. In addition, our team connected with colleagues at the Society for Neuroscience meeting in San Diego, CA, and at SYNAPSE in Clinton, SC. This spring brought a flood of new submissions, and we are developing innovative solutions to make the review and editing process less cumbersome on our review teams while maintaining our high standards. I’m excited to pass the torch on to Meghan Pavelka who has worked alongside me the past couple of months. I am confident that she will continue to lead the journal with professionalism and ingenuity.
